Criticism of Spotify has traditionally focused on its poor economics for artists and its flattening of music taste (read Liz Pelly’s excellent Baffler series for the best of both categories).
Seems like it's often the case that software tries to make us more useful to itself, rather than serve our needs in a straightforward way. A lot of things are obviously a mixture of both.
